Course Description
MATH 100 is a differential calculus for engineering and physical science students.
This is the first math course you will take as a UBC Engineering student. A lot of the content is high school review, especially if you took AP or IB Calculus.
The course covers topics such as derivatives, chain rule, power rule, mean value theorem, exponential growth and decay, curve sketching, Taylor series, and maxima and minima.
Types of Assignments To Expect
1. Pre-Calculus Assessment - At the beginning of the course, there is a pre-calculus assignment that covers concepts from pre-calculus 11 and pre-calculus 12. The assessment counts for completion (regardless of your score, you gain full marks).
2. WebWork Assignments - Many of the questions can be found doing similar textbook exercises or youtube tutorials.
3. Midterm - There is only one midterm for this class; a completely written response exam.
4. Final Exam - The final examination follows a similar format to the midterm.
Advice/Study Tips
The WebWork assignments were terrible preparation for the midterm and the final exams. Ignore those completely and stick to the CLP-1 textbook and practice for final exams.
The exams have very strict time limits. Once you understand the concept, focus on speed as much as accuracy to quickly recognize certain types of questions.
In the beginning, the homework assignments were very easy but escalated in difficulty after the midterm. Form a study group to complete the homework assignments faster.
Although there is no formula sheet allowed for exams, make one as a reference while studying to better remember theorems and formulas.
While doing practise midterms and finals, make a list of concepts you need to review and search up youtube tutorials or textbook examples & exercises to better understand those concepts.
A fresh review of pre-calculus concepts is also recommended.
Resources
1. The Organic Chem Tutor has a video playlist for calculus. The first half of the playlist is for MATH 100.
2. A website for MATH 100 created by Professor Sjerve includes assignments, practice midterms, and quizzes to work on.
3. A MATH 100 Pre-Calculus Assessment to Determine Readiness for MATH 100
4. This is a link for MATH 100 practice finals.
5. Paul's Online Notes has practice problems and examples for Calculus I problems which cover the same content as MATH 100.
